Serving the Iron Range and northeastern Minnesota

Safety/Low Crime

Safety/Low Crime
Northeastern Minnesota has long been known for its “Minnesota Nice.” The region is filled with a variety of cities, towns and countryside….all of which exemplify a relatively low crime rate, compared to the state of Minnesota as a whole.

Serious crime rate per 100,000 residents

Violent Crime
Per 100,000 residents, the violent crime rate in northeastern Minnesota is approximately 217.

In 2008, Minnesota’s crime rate was 15% lower than the U.S. rate. Only 8 percent of the crimes committed in 2008 in Minnesota were violent (forcible rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults), while 92 percent were property crimes (burglaries, larcenies and motor vehicle thefts). By comparison, about 12 percent of the crimes committed nationwide were violent, while 88 percent were property crimes (source: MN Department of Employment and Economic Development).

Compared to the state and country as a whole, northeastern Minnesota is a safe, secure place to live. The state of Minnesota's index crime rate of 3,113 incidents per 100,000 residents is the lowest level since 1969 (3,076.6), and marks a drop of 11.9 percent since 2003 - a slightly bigger decrease in crime than experienced by the nation as a whole during that span (-11.1 percent).
